09/16: RAC/SPA attends the Sustainable Ocean Initiative meeting in Seoul
RAC/SPA is participating in the "Sustainable Ocean Initiative global dialogue with Regional Seas organizations and Regional Fisheries Bodies on accelerating progress towards the Aichi biodiversity targets", from 26 to 29 September 2016 in Seoul (Republic of Korea)
The RAC/SPA director, Mr Khalil Attia, along with the MAP coordinator Mr Gaetano Leone, are participating in the "Sustainable Ocean Initiative global dialogue with Regional Seas organizations and Regional Fisheries Bodies on accelerating progress towards the Aichi biodiversity targets", organized by the CBD Secretariat in the framework of the Sustainable Ocean Initiative (SOI). Coordinated in collaboration with various partners, including UNEP and FAO, the SOI provides a global platform for capacity development and partnerships to support countries in their efforts to achieve the Aichi Biodiversity Targets.
This international meeting aims to promote experience exchange and to identify opportunities to promote cross-sectoral collaboration among Regional Seas organizations and Regional Fisheries Bodies, with a view to supporting their key role in facilitating achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and the relevant Sustainable Development Goals.
The meeting also aims to raise awareness on ongoing global and regional initiatives related to fisheries management and marine biodiversity (e.g., use of scientific information related to ecologically or biologically significant marine areas (EBSAs) and vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs), and/or impacts on marine biodiversity and living resources, marine spatial planning, impact assessments, the ecosystem approach to fisheries) and to provide a forum to discuss specific tools and guidelines that will enhance science-based, cross-sectoral and ecosystem-based approaches for addressing biodiversity and fisheries issues.
